Wineries and the Agricultural Experimentation One of the many factors that make Seneca Lake a popular tourist attraction is its unique macroclimate allowing for the growth of a vast array of grape varieties. Over 50 wineries focused on agriculture and sustainability, including some of the oldest and most prestigious ones in New York, grace its shores. This fertile region has earned itself the Seneca Lake American Viticultural Area (AVA) designation, which is recognized as an exceptional wine-producing region. Seneca Lake also hosts the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (NYSAES), a division of Cornell University. The NYSAES is dedicated to the research and development of agricultural and horticultural sciences to enhance and enable local industry and revitalize the rural economy.
